Description
New Monarch
In 1837, the 18-year-old Princess Victoria ascended to the throne, bringing with her an era of profound change and progress that would redefine the United Kingdom. The young queen’s reign saw the gold coinage flourish, featuring several different types and denominations. Amongst these, the half-sovereign holds a special place of interest for its unique charm and significance.
Craftsmanship of Engravers and Designers
Queen Victoria’s reign enlisted the talent of many notable engravers and designers, including William Wyon, Leonard Charles Wyon, Joseph Edgar Boehm, Thomas Brock, Benedetto Pistrucci, and Jean Baptiste Merlen. The inception of the new reign brought with it a new gold currency sovereign in 1838, its obverse featuring a young head bust of Queen Victoria, beautifully captured by William Wyon. Wyon was invited by the queen herself to Windsor Castle to model her likeness, resulting in an impressively accurate portrait that received considerable acclaim.
A Rare Collectible with a Unique Design
The half-sovereign made its first appearance in Victoria’s reign in 1857, a noteworthy event as the half-sovereign and the sovereign were the only gold coins struck for currency during her reign. The reverse of the coin, crafted by J.B. Merlen, showcases an ornate shield bearing the Ensigns Armorial of the United Kingdom. However, the Hanoverian arms, an integral part of the United Kingdom’s heraldic tradition, were omitted due to the Kingdom of Hanover’s male line succession law.
This coin is a testament to the rich history and heritage of the United Kingdom and the changes ushered in during Queen Victoria’s reign. It encapsulates the intricate craftsmanship and artistic direction of the era and remains a highly sought-after collectible for enthusiasts. Please note that during Victorian period large quantities of worn gold was withdrawn and melted. Bearing in mind that the sovereign and half-sovereign were then very much in use as currency, it is not unreasonable to suggest that this withdrawal of gold coinage would certainly have contributed much to the rarity aspect.
