Struck from 1887 to 1893, the Golden Jubilee half-sovereigns replaced the previous Wyon effigy with a new portrait crafted by the Royal Academician, Joseph Edgar Boehm. Exceptional Craftsmanship by J.E. Boehm
Born in Vienna in 1834, Boehm moved to England in 1862 and quickly established a reputation for his medal engraving and gem work. In 1881, he was appointed as ‘Sculptor in Ordinary’ to Queen Victoria and, in 1889, he was granted a Baronetcy. The bust of the Queen on the obverse of this coin was personally approved by Victoria herself and is just one example of his impressive body of work.
