The sovereign is one of the world’s best-known gold coins. In its modern form, it was first struck in 1817 during the reign of King George III, taking its name from a handsome 20-shilling gold coin introduced by King Henry VII in 1489.The reverse depicts the classic portrayal by Benedetto Pistrucci of St. George on horseback, slaying the dragon – a design that first appeared on the sovereigns of George III and has featured on all sovereigns since 1817. The obverse portrays Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, based on the renowned Arnold Machin portrait that has been used on most UK coins since 1968.

In 1980, the Royal Mint issued a maximum of just 100,000 sovereigns for worldwide distribution – of these, 90,000 were individually authorized for issue, while 10,000 were issued in boxed sets, each set containing four gold coins: a £5, £2, sovereign, and half sovereign. The specification of each coin is 22 carat gold, with a diameter of 22 millimeters and a weight of 7.9 grams, making it a treasured piece of numismatic history
