Released in 2018 to commemorate 100 years of the defence of Britain’s skies, this remarkable “Defence of Our Skies” Colour Sovereign collection pays tribute to the formation
of the Royal Air Force in 1918 and its enduring role in protecting the nation. Independently designed by Hattons of London, the set combines historic aviation themes with innovative modern minting techniques.

Description

The collection includes a Quarter Sovereign, Half Sovereign, and Full Sovereign, each featuring the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The reverses showcase iconic British aircraft set against a full-colour Union Flag backdrop: the Hawker Hurricane Mk I of 257 Squadron on the Quarter Sovereign, the Sopwith F.1 Camel of 208 Squadron on the Half Sovereign, and the Supermarine Spitfire Mk I of 92 Squadron on the Full Sovereign.
Significantly, each coin represents a world first within the Sovereign series, as the first gold Quarter Sovereign, Half Sovereign, and Full Sovereign ever issued to feature a coloured design. Combining military history, aviation heritage, and innovative craftsmanship, this collection stands as a unique tribute to a century of British air defence.
