Description
Although many Sovereigns continued to be struck during the war years, large quantities were retained within the nation’s gold reserves rather than released to the public. As a result, the 1914 Sovereign has become closely associated with this pivotal period in British monetary history and the transition away from circulating gold currency.
The obverse features the portrait of George V, designed by renowned Australian sculptor Bertram Mackennal in 1910. The reverse showcases Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St George and the Dragon design, one of the most celebrated and enduring images in British coinage. Combining historical significance with timeless artistry, the 1914 Sovereign remains an important and highly collectible piece of numismatic history.
